FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Academic research to be the topic of November 7 event

Thursday, November 3, 2011, Oshawa

Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus will be visited by Dr. Nancy Olivieri on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 4 p.m. in Room 125. The senior scientist from the Division of Clinical Investigation & Human Physiology at the Toronto General Research Institute will speak about her thoughts on “The Commercialisation of Academic Research.”

Dr. Nancy Olivieri received a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto and an MD from McMaster University in 1978. She pursued undergraduate and post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Hematology at McMaster University, the University of Toronto and Harvard University. She is currently a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute and a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Public Health Sciences, at the University of Toronto.

The author of over 200 scientific papers, reviews and book chapters, Dr. Olivieri was elected to The American Society for Clinical Investigation in 1996.  Arising from clinical research she initiated in Toronto in the late 1980s, Dr. Olivieri became the center of a controversy involving conflicts of interest in medical research (The Olivieri Report, Lorimer Press, 2001).
