Women’s Varsity Rugby Coach Named OUA Russell Division Coach of the Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Excalibur women also named OUA Russell Division All-Stars

Wednesday, October 26, 2011, Peterborough

The Trent Excalibur are well represented in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women’s rugby awards after the winners were announced earlier today. Team captain Lauren Wizowski, Peterborough native Ashley Burton and fourth-year eightman Kaitlin Newton were all named OUA Russell Division All-Stars, while Nancy Marcotte was named divisional coach of the year.

Wizowski (Lindsay, Ont.) is a fourth year prop for the Excalibur. She led the team in scoring this season with 25 points on five tries. Wizowski was named the OUA Female Athlete of the Week for the period ending September 25, thanks to her school record tying four-try performance against Laurier. The all-star award is the second of her career after being given the same honour following the 2009 season.

The 2011 All-Star award is also the second in the career of Port Hope, Ont.’s Kaitlin Newton.  Newton had four tries on the season and was a force both offensively and defensively for the Excalibur. Her previous all-star award came in the 2008 season.

Fifth-year scrumhalf Ashley Burton (Peterborough, Ont.) helped direct the offence to their highest point production in team history with 112 points scored. In addition to distributing the ball to start the offence, Burton chipped in two tries of her own on the season. The award is the third all-star nod in her career and being honour in 2007 and 2009.

Head coach Nancy Marcotte has been named Coach of the Year in the Russell division after leading her team to a 3-2 record after a winless 2010 campaign. This is the second divisional coach of the year award for Marcotte.  She was also named coach of the year for the 2007 season on the strength of winning first place in the Russell Division.
Marcotte and the rest of the Excalibur will now point their sights toward a strong showing at the CIS National Championship hosted by Trent. The event will be at Trent for the second year in a row and will feature the top six rugby teams from across Canada. The championship will take place at Justin Chiu Stadium from November 3 to 6.
