Trent Department of Athletics and Recreation Wins Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award for Ninth Consecutive Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario Recognizes Trent University for Intramural Excellence

Wednesday, May 18, 2011, Peterborough

For the ninth consecutive year, Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation has been awarded the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario’s Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award.

“Campus Recreation is a great way for Trent Students to get involved on campus, stay active and make new friends,” says Melanie Sedge, coordinator, Camps and Campus Recreation at Trent. “There is something for everyone, no matter of interests or skill level. In 2010-11 we started an Extramural Hockey Team that competed against schools in the OCAA league. Our team did extremely well, winning The Grizzly Shootout hosted by Georgian College in March and qualifying for the tournament of champions, The Challenge Cup. The team made it to the quarter finals in that tournament. We’re looking forward to seeing how they do in 2011-12 in their second year.”

Trent was one of only five post-secondary institutions to receive this year’s award. CIRA Ontario presents the Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award annually to the top programs at Ontario schools.

Trent University is being recognized for offering a variety of activities that promote CIRA Ontario’s motto of “fun active participation for all.” The intramural program is also being recognized for promoting student leadership and improving the quality of education through physical activity.

At Trent, over 1,500 students participated in intramural activities during the 2010/11 academic year. Activities ranged from ultimate Frisbee, intramural hockey, basketball, soccer, and volleyball and the more unique inner tube water polo and inner tube ultimate Frisbee. In 2010/11 underwater hockey was introduced.
