Row to Podium Project Hosts Open Call for Tall and Talented Athletes May 14 at Trent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Talent Development Centre at Trent searching for next generation of national and Olympic champion rowers

Wednesday, May 11, 2011, Peterborough

The search is on for the next generation of national and Olympic champions as the Trent Talent Development Centre (TDC) of the Row to Podium Project hosts an open call for tall and talented athletes on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre.

Any and all interested tall and talented individuals, who are between 17-22 years of age, have the attributes and passion to be an athlete and are interested in becoming part of Canada’s most successful Summer Olympic sport, are invited and encouraged to drop in to participate. No experience is necessary.

Participating athletes will be taken through a testing protocol, which entails anthropometric measurements, a medicine ball throw and an aerobic test. An information session about the Row to Podium Project will also be held. Successful candidates will be invited to join a program at the TDC at Trent this spring and summer.

The Row to Podium Project was established after the Olympic ‘Own the Podium’ committee ranked rowing as the number one targeted summer Olympic sport in Canada. This groundbreaking program, a partnership between Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA), ROWONTARIO (RO), Canadian Sport Centre Ontario (CSCO), and selected Ontario University and/or Club rowing programs, is aimed at cultivating a development pathway for future Olympian-level athletes and coaches in Ontario.

Trent University was selected as one of four TDC’s in Ontario after a highly-competitive bidding process. As head coach of the Trent TDC, renowned rowing coach and former Olympian Carol Love is in charge of identifying and training the future elite rowing athletes. Programming at the Trent TDC includes professional coaching, stage appropriate training and competitive opportunities, sport science and sport medicine support, quality equipment and quality training environments.
