Trent University Hosts Local and Regional High School Rugby Teams for Tournaments April 19-21

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

16 boys and girls teams from across Ontario to participate in tournaments at Trent’s state-of-the-art new athletic facilities

Monday, April 18, 2011, Peterborough

Trent University will host 16 senior high school rugby teams from across Ontario for three days of tournaments from Tuesday, April 19 to Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Justin Chiu Stadium, a state-of-the-art outdoor facility at the heart of the new Athletics Centre at the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre (TCSRC).

The annual tournaments aim to not only showcase Trent’s state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor athletic facilities to prospective students but also promote post-secondary education opportunities at the University.

“We have been focussing upon the development of our athletic facilities and programs over the last several years and now we are shifting to focus more on our community and student programs, including varsity,” said Bill Byrick, director of Athletics & Recreation at Trent University. “We have always had a great crew of coaches and now we have the state-of-the-art facilities to match. These tournaments will help to let students know about the opportunities that await them here at Trent, while we work to build our varsity program into teams of strong provincial and national championship contenders.”

Five girls’ teams will compete in the Excalibur Rugby Tournament on Tuesday. Teams include local high schools St. Peter’s Secondary School and Norwood District High School, as well as Arnprior District High School, Innisdale Secondary School and Eastdale CVI.

On the boys’ side, eleven teams will battle it out during two days of competition. Day one on Wednesday will feature Lakefield College School, Bracebridge Secondary School, Queen Elizabeth C.V.I., Haliburton High School, Saugeen District Secondary School and St. Michael’s College. On Thursday, Saugeen will return to face local schools Adam Scott C.V.I. and Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School, as well as St. Clair Secondary School, Trenton High School and St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School.

During the tournaments, the Trent Varsity Rugby teams will host a fundraiser with 20 per cent of all proceeds generated from the Johnny’s Eh’s chip truck in the stadium donated back to the teams. The chip truck will be open from 11am to 5pm all three days.
