YouTrent Video Contest Winners Take Home $2,000 in Prizes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Industry Expert Stephen Stohn Assists in Judging of Entries

Friday, February 5, 2010, Peterborough

The Bata Film Theatre was abuzz with excitement as the much-anticipated winning entries of Trent University’s first-ever YouTrent Video Contest were announced the evening of February 4, 2010.

The two winning videos were produced by fourth-year Environmental and Resource Science and Geography student, Ryan Mariotti, and the team effort of third-year Biology student, Matt Comartin, and English and Indigenous Studies student, Shannon Loucks. Each video was awarded the top prize of $1,000.

The contest, launched in September 2009 at www.trentu.ca/videocontest, culminated in a special event to screen the winning videos. Dr. Robin Lathangue, head of colleges, emceed the ceremonies.

“We wanted to create an opportunity for our students to share their enthusiasm for Trent,” said Dr. Lathangue, “while at the same time furnishing members of the Trent community with a way to celebrate the talent and creativity of our students.”

As the winners posed with enlarged one thousand dollar cheques in hand, each complimented the other’s work – and talked about the creative process that led to their success.

A panel of judges included Dr. Lathangue; Trent’s director of Marketing & Communications, Marilyn Burns; web developer, Marilyn Strain; as well as entertainment lawyer and producer, Stephen Stohn, an alumnus of Trent University who is also executive producer of the series Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Mr. Stohn, who was unable to attend the event, sent his expert opinion on the entries.

“You each took a unique approach to showing what Trent means to you,” he wrote. “And while the two pieces are very different, you are both to be commended for letting your enthusiasm and love for Trent shine through in your respective entries. In both the winning entries there were some beautiful shots, and some very nice editing.”

The winning videos are available at www.trentu.ca/videocontest and are also posted on YouTube to reach the broadest possible audience.
