The Trent International Program (TIP)
“Where the World Learns Together”

  • Established in 1982 by founding director Jack Matthews
  • Provides an integrated internationalized living/learning experience for both Canadian and international students at Trent
  • Programming includes: TIP Camp, World Affairs Colloquiums, residencies of renowned internationalists through the Jack Matthews Fellowship, international leadership development, Study Abroad opportunities, engagement with international service organizations like the World University Service of Canada Local Committee, AIESEC Student Leadership Intern organization, and a myriad of internationalized student organizations
  • Trent leads the country as the #1 university in Canada for the amount of scholarship funding provided to international students

Study Abroad Opportunities

  • Trent’s first official exchange partner was the University of Freiburg, Germany.
  • Since 1980, the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures has provided an opportunity for Trent students to spend a year in Freiburg.
  • More than 200 students per year over the past 5 years have participated in Study Abroad opportunities
  • Through TIP, it is possible to study almost anywhere in the world, either through a Trent program, or through TIP networks and partners
  • Active exchange agreements with more than 45 universities in 30 countries around the world
  • This summer alone, Trent students will study in Shanghai, China, Mexico, Belize, Taiwan and Turkey
  • Most recent new international partnerships:  Sheffield-Hallam University and Birmingham University in the United Kingdom, the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training in Hanoi, Can Tho University and Foreign Trade University in Vietnam
  • Retention rate for Trent students who complete a study abroad is 98%
  • Four of five IDS faculty have global reputations in their fields

International Development Studies (IDS) Program

  • Established in 1976 the IDS Program is one of the most established programs of its kind in Canada and the world
  • Renowned for offering a unique critical perspective on IDS, and for the quality of the graduates of the program
  • Third-year study abroad options in Ghana and Equador, combining a term of academic study with a placement in a local organization, are a hallmark of Trent’s international excellence
  • IDS students established Undercurrent, Canada’s undergraduate student-run IDS journal, the only one of its type in the world

Future of International Programming at Trent

  • Trent was recently successful in obtaining support for a Student Mobility Program for student exchanges between Trent and universities in the USA and Mexico.
  • Agreements currently under development with academic institutions in Asia to offer “offshore” Trent degrees and/or “2+2” academic programs
  • Trent’s Strategic Plan 2007-2014 recognizes need to continue to develop an institutional culture that supports internationalization
  • Part of the strategic plan is to increase the number of undergraduate international students to 700, or approximately 10% of the undergraduate student enrollment
