Laurel Ann Nissen

Toronto, Ontario
Sociology
Bagnani Medal Winner

Laurel Ann Nissen came to Trent as a mature student in 2001. After nearly a decade of part-time studies, she recently graduated from the University with a degree in Sociology.

At Trent, Laurel was able to develop her passion for learning and for studying social inequality, migration and gerontology. She also had the opportunity to gain quality research experience while working as a research assistant for professors in the Department.

Talking about her Trent experience, Laurel says, “I enjoyed being encouraged to be creative and having access to professors who are among the best in the world in their fields of study.”

As a student at both the Peterborough and Oshawa campuses of Trent University, Laurel has fond memories of collaborating with enthusiastic researchers, educators and students who are as passionate about Sociology as she is.

“I would like to thank the professors, staff and students at the Peterborough and Oshawa campuses for their kindness, support and company over the years,” Laurel says.

As a dedicated student, Laurel was awarded several bursaries during her time at Trent, including the Trent University Alumni Bursary, the Julian Blackburn College Student Association Bursary, and the Pearson Publishers Best Student Prize in Sociology. Reflecting on the awards, she says, “I am grateful for the awards that I received because they acknowledged my academic achievements, assisted me with tuition fees and encouraged me to continue my studies.”

At Convocation, Laurel was presented with yet another honour – the Bagnani Medal, one of the University’s top academic medals for graduates in the General program. “To me, a Bagnani Medal represents years of hard work and determination that could not have been achieved without the support of my husband, son, professors and staff at Trent University,” Laurel says.

Next on Laurel’s pursuit of higher education is law school. As a lawyer, she plans to focus on issues pertaining to social justice, drawing and building on the knowledge she gained at Trent. She is also passing along her love of Trent to her family. Her son, Zo, will begin his Masters degree at the University in the fall.
