David Ennis-Dawson

Ottawa, Ontario
Politics

Being a student and new graduate of Trent University fulfills a growing family legacy for David Ennis-Dawson; his mother is a graduate of Trent and he has two cousins who are also enrolled at the University.

David came to Peterborough from Ottawa in 2006 to study Politics. During his time here he has been an active student, involved in both campus life and the wider Peterborough community. Over the course of four years he has been a member of the Trent rowing team, a don at Champlain College and Otonabee College, helped campaign for Liberal MPP Jeff Leal, worked as a life guard with the Trent Athletics, acted as Politics Department rep and secretary for the Peterborough Young Liberal Association, and spent a year abroad in the UK, during which he served as an intern with the National Assembly for Wales.

“I love academia – interacting with fellow students and faculty discussing my wide range of interests,” David says, listing public policy, local issues, national issues, international politics and the environment among a number of topics he engages in. “I am not one to sit on the couch,” he admits. “I have a passion to be active.”

He takes this passion with him to Victoria, British Columbia as he leaves Peterborough to begin his Masters of Public Administration with ambitious future goals. “I have strong views about how public policy can be most effectively implemented and monitored,” he explains. “I hope to pursue a law degree and to be working for the federal government, ideally the Office of the Auditor General, in ten years.

“My desire to do my Masters at University of Victoria was strongly influenced by my experiences at Trent,” David says. “The intimate and intellectually stimulating classes and seminars have been a privilege to partake in. I experienced this atmosphere throughout Peterborough, especially in its student-centric downtown.”

He adds: “These past four years have been monumental in my young life; I have grown tremendously. My passion for politics was strengthened and refined by the excellent faculty. I am still impressed by the degree of specialization offered and the variety of areas available for study from a small department at a small university.”
