Andrew J. RowleyBrooklin, Ontario
English and History, Trent University in Oshawa
Coordinator of the Peer Mentor program; returning to Trent in 2008 to pursue a Master’s degree in History

Why did you choose Trent?

For me, marks have their place but they were never the destination.  The atmosphere at Trent allowed me to move beyond course and degree basics.  It came down to the direct access to administration and faculty that I fell into from day one at the open house.  The fact that I got to hit the ground running in my first year was not something I could ignore.  It’s been an edge I’ve been able to maintain throughout the past four years.

How would you describe yourself? How would others describe you? What are your passions in life?

What I am most passionate about is writing.  I’ve enjoyed exploring academic writing over the past four years and it’s something I’d like to continue while pursuing an interest in other writing styles as well.  I’m not entirely certain how others would describe me; you’d have to ask them.

Have you been involved in any clubs, groups, and/or sports at Trent? If so, which ones?

In my second year I joined Oshawa’s Peer Mentoring Program and last May I became one of the program Coordinators.

What has your time at Trent meant to you? What are some of your favourite memories? What will you take with you from Trent?

This is a hard question to answer because I will be returning to Trent in September to begin an M.A. in History.  It is difficult to assess what my time at Trent has meant when part of it is only beginning.

While I have nothing but fond memories of the past four years I’d have to say this final year has been the most memorable.  Co-running Peer Mentoring in Oshawa as a Coordinator has been an amazing experience.  The Trent community in Oshawa is very close and there isn’t much the Program doesn’t take at least some part in.  I also worked as a facilitator for ENG 2000 in Oshawa.  Being involved with both has certainly completed my experience as an undergrad far beyond anything I’d expected starting out.

Tell me about your future plans and aspirations. What do you hope to accomplish?

Well, I’ll be returning in September to start a one-year M.A. in History.  After that I plan to take a year off and spend some time overseas while applying to doctoral programs.  I also have a number of writing in projects I’d like to develop further.

Most recently, I’ve launched my own website (ajrowley.org) and have a growing interest in all things web-related.  I’m really looking forward to using that as a platform toward any number of new ventures.

How do I want to make a difference?  I’m not sure just yet but I don’t think there is a limit on the possibilities.  We’ll see.
