Eminent Service Award

Established in 1978, the Eminent Service Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the life of Trent University above and beyond excellence in carrying out their employment or volunteer responsibilities. It is normally awarded at the culmination of service to Trent. The award is presented on behalf of the Board of Governors, acting upon the recommendation of the Senate.

Katherine Curle

Trent University is pleased to announce that the Eminent Service Award will be presented to Katherine Curle on Tuesday, June 3, 2014at the 2:00 p.m. ceremony.

For 25 years, Katherine Curle has been a dedicated and passionate staff member at Trent University. Ms. Curle began her career working in the Trent International Program (TIP) Office in 1988, followed by time spent as the secretary of the women’s studies department, and then as the college assistant at Lady Eaton College from 1993 until her retirement in January 2014. During her career at Trent, Ms. Curle displayed exceptional commitment to student recruitment and relationship-building and was a positive influence on student life.

Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching

Established in 1976, the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching is Trent's most distinguished teaching honour. The award is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who displays exemplary teaching, as well as exemplary concern for students.

Mark Dickinson

Trent University is pleased to announce that the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching will be presented to Professor Mark Dickinson on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the 10:00 a.m. ceremony.

Recognized for his transformative teaching methods which have been significantly influenced by Indigenous concepts, Professor Mark Dickinson, an instructor in the Canadian Studies Department, has been teaching at the University for the past seven years. Prof. Dickinson has built classroom environments that are lauded for their benefit to student learning, through his purposeful efforts to build community within both larger lecture and smaller seminar environments. He aims to treat students as co-discoverers in their own learning, while providing an engaging, high-intensity learning environment.

Distinguished Research Award

Established in 1986, the Distinguished Research Award is given annually to a member of the Trent University faculty in recognition of outstanding achievement in research and scholarship.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Ian Storey

Trent University is pleased to announce that the Distinguished Research Award will be presented to Professor Emeritus Dr. Ian Storey on (TBC).

Recognized as a leading expert on the comedic plays of Aristophanes and his contemporaries in 5th-century BCE Greece, Professor Emeritus Ian Storey has been instrumental in providing deeper insight about this playwright and the associated literature of the period to students and fellow academics alike. Recently retired after teaching at Trent for 38 years, Prof. Storey joined Trent’s Ancient History & Classics faculty as a lecturer in 1974, becoming a full professor in 1989. He has published multiple monographs, delivered over 100 papers, lectures, and seminars, and published articles and reviews in a wide variety of journals. In addition to his ground-breaking research about and translations of Eupolis, Prof. Storey has written about a number of other playwrights and literary figures, including Euripides, Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis.
