After many years as a senior citizen part-time student at Trent - graduating in 1996 - Georgia Elston, while winding down Waapoone Publishing after producing seven books by First Nation writers, has been honoured by having a quotation from one included in a prestigious academic text. Indigenous Traditions and Ecology: The Interbeing of Cosmology and Community, distributed by Harvard University Press for the Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard Divinity School, includes a chapter by Harvey A. Feit, Professor of Anthropology at McMaster University. Professor Feit's chapter is titled, "Hunting, Nature and Metaphor: Political Discursive Strategies in James Bay Cree Resistance and Autonomy," in which he quotes Cree author Margaret Sam-Cromarty's poems, "Garden" and "Seven Steps" included in her book, James Bay Memoirs: A Cree Woman's Ode to her Homeland, published by Waapoone. After completing the editing of From Nelsons Falls to Lakefield: A History of the Village in time for Lakefield's 125th Anniversary in 1999, Georgia now hopes to find time to write some of her own material examining relations between non-Native and First Nations people. Although taking time off from courses at Trent, probably the call of the campus will lure her back.

Nickesh Alexander Mehta-Spooner Bina Mehta and Kevin Spooner are pleased to report that there is life after O.C.. Literally! After six years of donning at Otonabee, a move into the city appears to have contributed to the arrival of a son. Nikesh Alexander Mehta-Spooner was born May 10th at Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Donning certainly helped to prepare for the late night delivery at 2:48 a.m., but it was odd to be in the maternity ward and not the emergency room. Both families are very excited by the arrival of a first grandchild, as is his honorary Peterborough Grandma, Harlene Annett. Thanks to all at Trent for their best wishes and congratulations. Thanks also to the generations of O.C. students who have prepared us well for his teenage years; these early years are definitely going to be the tricky ones!
