Bonnie M. Patterson
President and Vice-Chancellor

The beginning of this academic school year signifies another milestone for Trent University.

This year marks the 37th anniversary of the founding of Trent. While attention will be paid to the actual anniversary date on October 17th there are other developments that also mark the continued growth and strength of our university.

One of the significant indicators of Trent's evolution is our changing student population base. With the elimination of Grade 13 in 2003, we will plan for a doubling of our first year student population due to the 'double cohort' of students this change creates.

To prepare for the arrival of 1,295 additional students in 2003, all aspects of the university's operations will be reviewed. Whether it is the support and counselling programs provided by our Student Services department, or our financial aid and scholarship programs, Trent is preparing today to meet the needs of both a younger and increased student population.

An integral part of these preparations is the implementation of the Build 2000 program. Through an investment of over $26-million from the provincial government's SuperBuild Growth Fund, Trent will turn the sod this fall and embark on the most ambitious building expansion program in its history.

Construction of a new $17-million sciences facility is scheduled to begin this November and construction of residential space should begin in June, 2002. Fundraising continues for the First Peoples' House of Learning, a unique initiative that reflects Trent's leadership role in delivering Native Studies curricula and supporting aboriginal students who chose Trent for their studies. The building designs being developed will complement both architect Ron Thom's original architectural vision for Trent and will capitalize on the natural setting that showcases the university.

Trent is a unique community and much of our continued success is based on our alumni support. This past year Trent alumni demonstrated their generosity by donating record amounts to our various fundraising initiatives. The success of the "Beyond Our Walls" campaign is in large part due to your generosity.

With the help of alumni, Trent continues to build on its 37-year track record of academic success, innovative research and quality liberal arts and science programming. On behalf of the university I want to thank all of our alumni for helping Trent fulfill its mission and wish our new and returning students continued academic success.
