Five Local Students Off to Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa

Trent University Scholarship Winner Among Those Competing

Thursday, May 8, 2008, Peterborough

Five students from the Peterborough area, who were winners at the Peterborough Regional Science Fair, will be traveling to Ottawa on May 10 to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair.   

The students competed at the 38th annual Peterborough Regional Science fair this past April and won trips to compete at the National fair in Ottawa.  The five students are:

Alice Yang, Grade 12, Holy Cross, won the Sci Tech Ontario Stepping Stone award for the top senior project.  Her project, “The Spice of Life” also won first place in the Senior Biological Division, and the Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories Award.  She was also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to attend Trent University.

Emily Bryans, Grade 9, Holy Cross, won the RBC Dominion Securities Award for the top intermediate project.  Her project, “Jitter Bugs” also won first place in the Intermediate Biological Division.

Robert Buchkowski, Grade 12, PCVS, won second place in the Senior Biological Division for his project, “The Leaching of Bisphenol-A from Polycarbonate bottles as a function of Temperature”   He also won the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Innovation Award and received a $1,000. scholarship for the University of Ottawa.

Sabheen Khan, Grade 12, Adam Scott, qualified for the national fair with her project, “Boning UP with Herbal Remedies”   She also received the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Innovation Award. 

Sarah Langer, Grade 11, Lakefield District Secondary School, qualified for the national fair with her project, “Human Decomposition”

Over 500 finalists from 98 regional fairs will be competing in Ottawa at the week long event.

Peterborough will be hosting the 2010 Canada Wide Science Fair at Trent University and the Evinrude Centre.
