Trent University to Honour Varsity Women’s Rugby Team for Outstanding Season

Special Banner Raising Ceremony to be Held January 11

Trent University’s varsity women’s rugby team will be honoured by the University for their stellar 2007 season in a special banner-raising ceremony on Friday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m.

“These talented athletes made history last year by making it all the way to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) finals, winning the eastern conference of the OUA ,” said Bill Byrick, director of athletics for the University. “The entire Trent community is extremely proud of them, so we felt it was important to recognize their achievement by raising the official OUA banner in their honour.”

Known for their consistent performance on the field and for their remarkable team chemistry, the Trent Excalibur had the best season in Trent history for women’s varsity rugby, highlighted by a hard won victory over the University of Toronto Blues to finish first in the OUA Russell Division.

In addition, Trent head coach Nancy Marcotte was named the Russell Division coach of the year, while player Krissy Boyles was named the division's most valuable player and four other players, Julie Brown, Ali Harvey, Lori McAvoy and Ashley Burton,.were named to the all-star squad. Ms. Boyles led the team this season with 27 points, accounting for 30 per cent of the team's scoring. Ms. Marcotte and assistant coach Craig Harris were at the helm of Trent's best year in women's rugby with a season-ending record of four wins and one loss.

The banner raising ceremony will take place in the Athletics Complex gymnasium at Trent University at 7:30 p.m. Members of the media and the Peterborough community are welcome and encouraged to attend.
