 The Department of Cultural Studies and Teatr Korzenie to Present Eugène Ionesco’s Absurdist Play The LessonFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, January 11, 2007, Peterborough The Department of Cultural Studies at Trent University and Teatr Korzenie will present an adaptation of French-Romanian playwright Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist play, The Lesson, on February 2, 3 and 4 at Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space at Trent University, and on February 9 and 10 at Sadleir House. The Lesson is a dark and twisted tale about the grossly unequal relations of power in the world that are played out in one professor’s cozy drawing room. Ionesco’s play strips bare the ceremonial garments of civility and liberalism to reveal a world of totalitarianism, despotism, racism, and sexism. Adapted and directed by co-artistic directors Dr. Kazubowski-Houston and Shawn Kazubowski-Houston, and performed by students from Trent University’s Department of Cultural Studies, this workshop production of The Lesson (the final version of the play will be presented this summer at the Hamilton Fringe Festival) will be performed on the following dates: Friday, February 2 at 1:00 p.m., Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space, Enweying/Peter Gzowski College, Trent University. This performance will be for local high school students. An acting workshop will follow at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free. The theatre troupe Teatr Korzenie was formed close to two decades ago in Poland by Dr. Magdalena Kazubowski-Houston, and has since staged plays in Poland, the United States, and Canada. The theatre of Teatr Korzenie is unsettling and challenging, and draws from the Polish avant-garde physical theatre traditions of Jerzy Grotowski, Tadeusz Kantor, and Jozef Szajna. Its adaptation of Szajna’s play Replika was awarded best performance at the third annual International Festival for the Fine and Performing Arts (Tczew, Poland) in 2002. -30- Members of the press are welcome to preview/review the play at one of the advance rehearsal performances.
