Trent’s Future Teachers Host Annual Environmental Science Exhibition Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

250 Elementary Students at Millbrook South Cavan Public School to Attend November 30 Event

Tuesday, November 28, 2006, Peterborough

Trent University education students currently enrolled in a course designed to show them how to teach environmental science in the classroom will hold an Environmental Science Exhibition for approximately 250 students in grades one to six at Millbrook South Cavan Public School from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30.

This exhibition is an annual event that is put on each year at a host elementary school. Now in its fifth year, the exhibition has been hosted by both Millbrook South Cavan Public School and R.F. Downey Public School in Peterborough.

Fifty-five Trent students are currently enrolled in the Environmental Science for Teacher Education course, which organizes this event. Students taking the course are mainly Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education students and students in Trent’s Emphasis on Teacher Education program.

The exhibition is an opportunity for the future teachers to develop an exhibit that will interest children in environmental science concepts through hands-on learning, as well as to test some of the ideas and techniques learned in their course. The exhibits are self-directed learning centres with a combination of media and materials to allow the children to learn from the displays with some facilitation from the exhibit designers.

This year there will be 16 exhibits on display, covering a variety of subjects related to the Ontario Science Curriculum, including water resources and pollution, endangered species, effects of urban development on habitat, and compost. Other exhibit titles include: “Watt can you do to conserve energy?”; “Where do I live and what do I eat?”; “Keep our planet clean and green”; and “Upstream Racers: Life Cycle of Salmon”.

The Environmental Science Exhibit is one of two practica in the Environmental Science for Teacher Education course. The second, a series of hands-on workshops, will be held March 1 at Camp Kawartha for students in grades three to six.
