2015 Graduate Profiles

Lauren Miller

Lauren Miller '11, B.A., Pyschology, Queen’s-Trent Concurrent Education Program, Grimsby, Ontario

Trent’s small class sizes and intimate setting appeals to Lauren. However, the global-scale experience she encountered at the University of the West Indies in Barbados through the Trent Study Abroad Program made a big impact.

Recalling her semester away in third year, Lauren said, “Studying in Barbados was the best decision I made during my time at Trent.” She continues, “I was able to enrich my degree by taking courses at another University, while making connections with people both inside and outside of my field from all over the world.  I feel it was an invaluable experience academically, not to mention a tonne of fun!”

Upon return from her exchange, Lauren directed her passion for international education by working in Trent’s Study Abroad Office. She feels her student job offered her experience and networking opportunities while working conveniently on campus.

Serving as a volunteer she developed her leadership skills within the Trent International Program and the International Program Orientation Camp as she assisted new international students with the process of adjusting to life in Canada.

Inspired by Lauren’s enthusiasm, two exchange students who began their own radio show with Trent Radio this year invited Lauren as a featured guest to talk about her exchange in Barbados.  Lauren revealed, “That was an amazing experience and I would encourage anyone with interest in radio to take advantage of that program.”

In terms of academics, Lauren was able to customize her degree. She knew Psychology was for her after falling in love with the subject in first and second year. “My interest only grew from there as the courses got more specialized and specific,” said Lauren.  “Even within Psychology there were so many interesting courses to choose from.  I still can’t get enough!”

For her academic achievement Lauren received the Trent National Renewable Entrance Scholarship. She also received a Study Abroad Bursary for participating in the program.

As with many Trent graduates, Lauren appreciates the passionate, approachable professors and the welcoming community.

“It’s a small enough school to provide a personal experience in the classroom, yet big enough that the possibilities seem endless,” said Lauren.  “There are so many ways to get involved. There is something for everyone.”

Lauren will complete one final year of her program at Queen’s University to earn a Bachelor of Education.  She hopes to teach abroad before returning to possible graduate studies.  She feels her degree has opened her eyes to many of the challenges people face in modern society.  With her education in hand she hopes to positively impact the lives of many people in the future.

Lauren summarizes, “Trent has provided me with opportunities to explore my interests, take a variety of courses, and study abroad. It has really helped me find out where my passions lie, and given me confidence to pursue those passions.”
