Scott Wight

Scott Wight ’11, B.Sc., Nursing, Peterborough, ON

Scott Wight’s interest in nursing leadership in modern medicine reflects his nature: he has always liked to make people feel good and feels it is important to create a positive and welcoming environment for others. Scott is a recent graduate of the compressed Trent Nursing program. Through academic studies and clinical placements, Scott quickly realized that nursing encompasses much more than just what happens at the bedside.

“I was very fortunate to have some excellent mentors and professors who enabled my interest in nursing leadership and encouraged my development as a student nurse,” said Scott. “I hope to take what I have learned at Trent and develop my skills throughout my professional career as a nurse and nurse leader.” Scott is currently working as a registered nurse and a clinical technology project manager at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), and feels very lucky to have found such rewarding work at a local hospital right out of school.

Scott is devoted to his academic studies as much as his profession. While at Trent, he received the Elizabeth Collins Nursing Leadership Prize for outstanding leadership. He feels the award recognized his work at Trent, but also the valuable perspective nurses can bring to our communities. Scott was also a co-recipient of the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association (CASN) prize for Excellence in E-Health for his involvement in producing a mental health mobile website. The site provides Trent University students with an easy access point for delivering information regarding mental health issues. He is proud that the website continues to be a sustainable resource in the Trent environment.

Scott appreciates his respectful and supportive professors, who encouraged him to excel in his area of interest. “While working on my fourth-year thesis project, I was treated more as a colleague than a student and was given the freedom to explore ideas without the fear that making a mistake was anything but a learning experience,” revealed Scott.  “The small class sizes and the over-arching influence of professors who knew your name ultimately contributed to my success at Trent.”

Scott is well on his way to an inspiring career on the front lines of caregiving. Regarding his future he said, “My wish is to help others in a huge way. Trent has facilitated its beginnings.”
