2014 Graduate Profiles

Liam Ledgerwood

Jun Oh ’09, Honours B.Sc., Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Peterborough, ON

Jun Oh is bracing for an epic battle to save lives. With his degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology he is poised for future medical victories, utilizing the power of natural killer cells to safely eliminate viruses that cause chronic or deadly infections.

“During my time at Trent, I learned many things about the immune system and viruses,” said Jun. “I am very impressed with currently known capabilities of Natural Killer cells and see them as a great candidate to safely and efficiently tackle these evasive pathogens. I want to help them to reach their fullest potential.” Jun has been inspired by Dr. Edward Jenner, who introduced vaccinations centuries ago: he wants to continue Dr. Jenner’s legacy of saving lives and promoting the power of discovery.

Jun maintained high marks at Trent and was frequently placed on the Dean’s Honour Roll. He credits Dr. Craig Brunetti, Dr. James Sutcliffe and Dr. Carolyn Kapron for their invaluable support and feedback. “They all shaped me into a more disciplined scientist,” he said. Jun carried out a research project in Dr. Kapron’s lab, investigating the link between the toxic effects of cadmium and birth defects. The experience was a memorable one and Dr. Kapron encouraged him to freely discuss and explore ideas.

Jun will continue to study Microbiology and Immunology in graduate school at the University of Ottawa. Regarding his altruistic ambitions, Jun said: “Ultimately, it is my dream to dedicate my life in order to make meaningful discoveries and advance our knowledge so that its applications could be used to help save many lives and improve our quality of life. A degree from Trent will be an important foundation for that dream.”
