Irene Brueckner-Irwin 09, BSc. Honours Environmental Chemistry, Kingston, ON

» Video Transcript

Irene Brueckner-Irwin wants to create a more open-minded world. Trent’s experiential learning style and fostering of interdisciplinary dialogue has given her the background she needs to do just that.

While pursuing a degree in Environmental Chemistry, Irene also fuelled her diverse interests by taking on a minor in International Development, drawing inspiration from faculty like Dr. Jackie Solway whose excitement about her field was infectious. “It always amazed me what a wealth of knowledge our Trent professors are,” said Irene. “I think the most special impact a professor can have is to inspire students to love what they do.”

Irene also gained a unique combination of academic and real-world studies through an unforgettable internship experience with the Trent-In-Ghana (TIG) Program, working at the Water Research Institute in Ghana. Reflecting on her time at Trent and abroad, Irene said, “The best thing about studying at Trent is out-of-classroom learning gained from extra-curricular activities, studying abroad, and social and life experiences.”

As a champion of diversity and inclusivity, Irene’s efforts have been recognized through various awards, including the Dr. Michael Alcott Award, of which she is especially proud.  “I am honoured to receive an award in Dr. Mike’s name, since he is such a role model to students and has encouraged and celebrated Trent’s diversity in so many ways,” Irene said. She also gave back to the Trent community through her work as an advisor for the Trent Global Living Community at Champlain College, participating in the Champlain Cabinet, staffing the Introductory Seminar Week (ISW), and attending the Trent International Program (TIP) Orientation Camp for international students.

Planning to travel and pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Development in Europe, Irene will take along the knowledge, confidence and diverse experience she gained at Trent in her quest to change the world as we know it.
