2013 Graduate Profiles

Ethan McDonald ’09, Bachelor of Science, Geography, Trenton, ON

“The learning environment at Trent has significant emphasis on the journey.”

Ethan McDonald’s passion for geography was ignited in first year. He is an officer with the Royal Canadian Artillery and will continue working with the Canadian Forces after graduation.  He served as co-president and as an active member of the Trent University Geographical Society where he honed his skills and gave back to students who also enjoy natural sciences and studies.  He was awarded the Department of Geography’s Founders’ Prize which reinforced that his academic and community efforts in geography have made a noticeable impact.

What will you do with your Trent degree?
I will continue my employment with the Canadian Forces, as an officer with the Royal Canadian Artillery. The abilities to read the land and write the earth are geographic traits that are well suited to the military.  Geography specific skills including survey and navigation are particularly useful as an Artillery officer.

What did you get out of your Trent degree?
My degree at Trent has better prepared me to be a leader. The principles of duty, loyalty, integrity and courage were instilled by training with the Canadian Forces. I was able to apply these to my schooling towards academics and extracurricular activities.

What is the best thing about studying at Trent?
The best thing about studying at Trent is the relaxed atmosphere. We are all here seeking
education so academia is important. But in addition to the goal, the learning environment at Trent also has significant emphasis on the journey.

Can you give an example of how Trent professors had a special impact?
All of the professors in Trent's Department of Geography are excellent. They are approachable for assistance and are supportive of the cohesive geography community.  Department secretary, Marilyn Miller and department lab demonstrator, Miles Ecclestone, had a special impact on my time at Trent.  Both Marilyn and Miles have provided amazing guidance and support for all students in geography and especially those who are a part of the Trent University Geography Society (TUGS).

Extracurricular activities:
In third year, I became an active member of (TUGS). This past year, I was co-president.  My participation with TUGS has made me a better public speaker, a more confident leader, and better prepared for the challenges post university.
