Myles Latter ’09, Honours Bachelor of Arts, Biology and Philosophy, Lindsay, ON

“All of the professors that I had at Trent were amazing!”

As a member of the Introductory Seminar Week group and a social representative on the College Cabinet, Mr. Myles Latter learned how to be a leader and effective communicator.  He found the accepting environment at Trent an ideal place to take on new challenges and initiatives. He received a rowing award in first year in reward for his hard work and dedication.  His love of philosophy was fostered by an inspirational professor and a welcoming classroom.

What are your future goals?
I am currently working as the facilities summer assistant in the housing office at Trent.   I plan on travelling and also taking some specialization courses until I can really say I have found the career that I want.

Why did you choose Trent?
I initially started as a biochemistry major. However, my love for philosophy, which started in high school, competed with my interest in chemistry. I decided on philosophy over chemistry simply because of my first year philosophy professor, Byron Stoyles.  I really enjoyed his class and just felt like I fit in.

What is the best thing about studying at Trent?
The best thing about studying at Trent is the community. There is never a time that I walked across campus and didn’t see a hundred smiles. Everyone at Trent is so friendly and approachable. I must also admit that all of their faculty members are amazing too.  Trent is not about just an education, it’s about evolving.

Since being at Trent, I became engaged and involved in a community. Trent allowed me to be myself and expand into some new challenges like Introductory Seminar Week (ISW).  It’s something I would never have done in high school. I think Trent is such an accepting community that I was never afraid to try something new or just be myself.

Can you give an example of how Trent professors had a special impact?
All of the professors that I had at Trent were amazing! I was very lucky in that sense. They were all so approachable.  Professor Byron Stoyles has the ability to really engage students and actively listen to them.  He was also very approachable and was always available if I ever needed help.

My College Head, Mike Allcott, has the amazing ability to encourage students to wholeheartedly engage in activities. He is also great at challenging students to excel or even step out of their comfort zone.  I don’t think I’d be where I am today without some of his guidance, direction and challenges.

Extracurricular activities:
Two main activities that had major impact on my personal development would be ISW and College Cabinet. I think a major part of getting a Personal Statement of Experience is becoming active and finding your role and your interests.  Experience as an ISW leader trains you to be active and loud and engage students but also teaches you how to listen to each student individually, a very incredible skill to learn since they have so much to say.

I was a social representative on College Cabinet.  This taught great leadership, teamwork skills, time management and the ability to think on your feet.
