Trent University Wraps Up Most Successful United Way Campaign to Date

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Campus events and initiatives push Trent passed fundraising goal, helping to raise over $74,000

Monday, December 9, 2013, Peterborough

Through the success of campus events and initiatives and the generosity of staff, faculty and retirees, Trent University has surpassed its fundraising goal of $68,000 for this year’s United Way Campaign, raising an impressive $74,582 in support of the United Way of Peterborough & District.

“The United Way supports the Peterborough community in so many ways and I’m very proud of Trent’s ongoing commitment to support their work,” said Dr. Steven E. Franklin, president and vice-chancellor, Trent University. “This is a record setting year for the University and I couldn’t be happier.”

Trent’s campaign was launched in October and started off strong with an annual kick-off BBQ, which broke the $1,000 mark for the first time. This momentum was carried on throughout the main pledge drive and capped off with a raffle on December 5, which featured more than 20 unique gift baskets, from power tools to paddles and camp gear. The baskets were created and donated by the academic and administrative departments at the University as well as some of the local contractors and companies that complete work at Trent.

“Success in education, business and life, in general, is all about giving back – and the United Way is about community giving,” said Dr. Torben Drewes, faculty co-chair of Trent’s United Way campaign. “I’m pleased that the staff, faculty and retirees of Trent gave so generously to support the community.”

Trent University has been supporting the United Way annually since 1965. The United Way is a community-based, not-for-profit umbrella organization that distributes donations to 32 member agencies and supports over 150 programs and services in Peterborough City and County. The money raised by the Trent’s United Way Campaign goes to the United Way of Peterborough & District, where it stays in the community to help more than 47,000 people in need.
