FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Steven E. Franklin speaks on economic, social, cultural and recreational progress as well as 50th anniversary plans

Monday, October 15, 2012, Peterborough

Dr. Steven E. Franklin gave a presentation at the Rotary Club of Peterborough luncheon today, highlighting the important economic, social and cultural roles the University plays in the Greater Peterborough Area and in Durham region.

“It was a pleasure to speak with the Rotary members,” said President Franklin. “Trent has some exciting initiatives underway and big plans for our 50th anniversary and beyond. We are committed to being a strong member of the community.”

In his presentation, President Franklin touched on the significant economic benefits the University brings to the regions of Peterborough and Durham. With 1900 employees, Trent is one of the largest employers in the region, with a regional economic impact of the University close to $300 million.

Referencing the key planning documents that are guiding the University, he called attention to Trent’s four signature areas Sustainability and the Environment, Life and Health Sciences, Canadian/Indigenous Studies and Critical Cultural Inquiry. Acknowledging Trent’s leadership in research and teaching, President Franklin also emphasized the University’s community connections. He highlighted one of the key pillars in Trent’s proposed Strategic Mandate Agreement is Leadership in the Community.

“Our Athletic Centre, community lectures and the Trent Centre for Community Based Education are just a few examples of how our students, faculty and staff contribute to the outstanding quality of life we enjoy here,” commented President Franklin.

As Trent approaches its 50th Anniversary, plans are underway to engage the business, social and cultural communities surrounding the two campuses to increase collaboration,
generate and share new knowledge, drive economic development and improve quality of life.

A 50th Anniversary Celebration book is in progress, including stories from community members about their memories of Trent. The book will be written by former Trent student and writer D’Arcy Jenish. President Franklin encouraged community members to share their stories at www.trentu.ca/fifty.
