Trent Rowers Travel Stateside for Prestigious Dad Vail Regatta

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Largest collegiate regatta in the United States features 100 colleges and universities from across US and Canada

Monday, May 7, 2012, Peterborough

Early Thursday morning Trent University rowers will depart for Philadelphia, PA to the prestigious Dad Vail regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the United States.

On May 11-12, 2012 more than 100 colleges and universities from across the US and Canada will participate in the 75th annual regatta testing their fitness over 2000m on the Schuylkill River.

“We’re looking forward to testing our speed and flexing our Canadian muscle against the top collegiate crews in the US”, said Head rowing coach Jacqui Beattie. “Over the winter, the rowers put in countless hours of training and the idea of participating in the Dad Vail regatta was a great incentive to keep the rowers motivated and looking forward to getting back on the water”.

Participating in the regatta will be Brandon Griffin and David Mungham in the men's pair and Gregory Wilson, Rory Lepage, Tanner Cookson, Alex Verkuyl and Fraser Banks in the men's varsity four.

The rowers are looking to bring home some hardware from the regatta though they know it won’t be easy. “It’s not just the American crews that will be fast, Western and Brock will also be stiff competition,” acknowledges David Mungham, bow of the men’s pair. “We’re hoping to surprise some schools and put Peterborough and Trent University on the map.”

Mother’s Day Scrimmage
Also happening on Sunday, May 13 at the Peterborough Rowing Club (PRC), home of the Trent rowing team, is the annual Mother’s Day scrimmage. Local high school crews will be racing each other over 2000m in preparation for the Canadian Secondary School Association Regatta on June 1-3, 2012 in St. Catharines.
