Gwynne Dyer Brings Arab Spring to Trent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Internationally renowned journalist to discuss a New Middle East

Monday, March 19, 2012, Peterborough

At 7 p.m. on Monday March 19, 2012, international columnist Gwynne Dyer will deliver his latest lecture entitled, “A New Middle East” in Gzowski College Room 114, presented by The Trent Central Student Association.

The Arab Spring, referring to the non-violent democratic revolutions sweeping through the Arab World, are being referred to by some as a great advance for liberty, but do they solve the problem of poverty? Is it possible that they open the door to power to Islamist movements? Will new anti-Western regimes cut off the West’s oil supply, or send terrorists to attack Western countries, or both? Dr. Gwynne will unpack these questions in his talk.

Dr. Gwynne Dyer is a Canadian journalist, syndicated columnist and military historian. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at the age of sixteen. He earned his Ph.D. in Military and Middle Eastern History from King's College in London, England in 1973. Dr. Dyer served in the Canadian, American, and British naval reserves. He was a senior lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, from 1973 to 1977 when he began writing articles for London newspapers on the Arab-Israeli conflict and decided on a full-time career in journalism. In 2010, he was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada.

Trent University will present Dr. Dyer with an honorary degree at a convocation ceremony onWednesday, June 6, 2012, for his significant international contributions as a geopolitical analyst, journalist, broadcaster, filmmaker, author, and lecturer.
