Trent University is abuzz, as fourth-year volleyball player Sara Rettie (Newmarket, Ont.) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding play-off performance over the weekend.
Rettie, a veteran middle hitter, collected a game-high 18 points as the Excalibur knocked off the Sheridan Bruins 3-2 in a very close OCAA Cross-over play-off game. Her 18 points came on 11 kills, five blocks and two aces.
“Sara is a student leader both on and off the court,” said Bill Byrick, Trent Athletic Director. “We are very proud of the entire team and it is especially great to see a student leader step up in her fourth year to lead the team in a very close fought game with good team like Sheridan.”
In defeating the Bruins, Rettie and the Excalibur advanced to the OCAA Championship tournament. The event is taking place at Georgian College in Barrie from February 23-25. The Excalibur will open the tournament Thursday at 3 p.m. against the Humber Hawks, who are the four-time defending OCAA champions and are ranked No. 5 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
