Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Peterborough

Members of the senior class of the Trent Judo Club at the Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre put in a strong showing at their first championship tournament in Kitchener over the weekend, finishing with a gold, silver and bronze medal.

The Asahi Open Judo Championship held at the Conestoga College Recreational Centre in Kitchener on Saturday, October 1, marked the first time students from the adult class have participated in a competition since the Judo Club made its debut at the Trent Athletics Centre in January 2011.

Gold medal honours went to Jeff Doherty, the youngest member of the senior team, winning all matches against six fighters in the -81kg - yellow, orange, and green belt division by Ippon, a clean, controlled throw with speed and force or submission on the ground.

Silver and bronze medals were both awarded to heavy weight class fighter, Ryan Franckowiak, who fought in two divisions, including masters (over 30 years old) and senior  (-100kg brown and black belt division). Franckowiak, a PhD student at Trent, fought eight matches in total and came second in the Masters division and third in the Senior division.

Other members of the senior class also had strong showings. Adam Yhap finished in fourth place in the senior (-73kg yellow, orange, green, and blue belt division) and John Maclauchlan, a brown belt fighter, finished fourth in the (-81kg brown and black belt division), after facing two black belt fighters who are ranked number 1 and 2 in Canada.

“It was wonderful to watch our members demonstrate superb kiai, mutual respect and look after each other during the course of the long day,” said Sensei Tom Hino. “They got better and better and more confident after each match. I am sure more will follow these fearless Samurai at the next two tournaments.”

Upcoming tournaments for the Trent Judo Club will be held in North York on October 22 and in Ajax on November 26.

The Trent Judo Club is led by coach and Sensei Tom Hino, manager/coach Paul Teleki and coach Shayne Dahl. The club is run out of the new Trent Community Sport & Recreation Centre and is open to all members of the community. Youth classes begin at age seven.
