Professor Holger Hintelmann Appointed as Dean of Arts & Science (Sciences)

Trent University is pleased to announce that following an extensive search, Holger Hintelmann, a professor of Chemistry and Environmental & Resource Sciences at Trent for over 14 years, has been appointed as the new Dean of Arts and Science (Sciences) for a five year term July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President Academic, the Dean of Arts & Science (Sciences) has primary, hands-on responsibility for coordination and ongoing direction of the Sciences departments and programs within the University, the quality of degree programs offered through these departments and programs, the development and staffing of departments and programs within the Sciences, the recruitment of high quality full- and part-time faculty members, the professional development of full-time faculty members, budget management, provision of academic support services to Sciences departments and programs, science workshops, science facilities and space, and related matters.

"I am delighted to be chosen as the Dean of Arts and Science (Sciences)," said Professor Hintelmann. "I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students, and the senior administration to build on Trent's reputation in the Sciences”.

Dr. Hintelmann has been a professor of Chemistry/Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent since 1997 and has been the Acting Dean since 2010. He has served as the Director of the Environmental and Life Sciences Graduate Program, Chair of the Chemistry Department, and Associate Director of the Trent/Queen’s Graduate Program. Professor Hintelmann earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Hamburg University (Germany). Prior to coming to Trent as an NSERC Industry (INCO) Research Chair, he held research positions at the GKSS Research Centre in Germany, and Visiting Scientist positions in Ireland, France and Canada. Prof. Hintelmann’s research focuses on environmental chemistry (mercury cycling and accumulation), and he has published over ninety peer reviewed articles, ten book chapters, and numerous reports and conference proceedings.

"Holger brings considerable administrative experience at Trent to this position together with an impressive teaching and research record," said Gary Boire, Vice-President Academic at Trent. "I am very pleased that he has accepted this position, and will be a part of our academic administrative team working on implementing the academic plan." 

Members of the Search Committee included: Professor Gary Boire (Chair, Provost and Vice-President Academic), Spenser Anderson (TCSA), Professor Stephen Bocking (ERST), Professor Peter Dillon (Chemistry), Jason Henry (GSA), Carolyn Johns (OPSEU), Professor Jacqueline Muldoon (Dean, School of Education), and Professor Dave Patton (Physics & Astronomy).
