Every year the Whitby Chamber of Commerce presents an award to the top business students from each high school in Whitby. This year the students were recognized at a ceremony which took place on Friday, June 26 at the Whitby Chamber of Commerce head office.

“We love getting the support and involvement of our local institutions,” noted Darla Price, Marketing and Communications lead at the Whitby Chamber of Commerce and main organizer of the high school business award program. “It is wonderful that we have the support of the higher education institutions from Durham, such as Trent University Durham and UOIT. The high school business award program is really great way to showcase young leaders and future entrepreneurs in our community and to show that they have support here in Durham.”

Recipients received a $100 award from the Chamber, plus swag bags from Trent University Durham and the Town of Whitby. The bags included travel mugs and Trent’s signature sunglasses. This year’s winners were Jordan Shortt (Anderson CVI), Mahika Perera (Father Leo Austin Catholic High), Anthony Gomes (All Saints Catholic High), Jonathan Onett (Henry Street High), Lauren Pineau (Sinclair High) and Bethany Larmour (Donald A. Wilson High). Ms. Perera also received the new JCI Durham Leadership Award, which is an additional $500 scholarship towards her post-secondary education.

Trent University Durham aims to support local initiatives in the community that help promote young leaders and up and coming entrepreneurs, lending support to other organizations such as the Community Innovation Lab in Durham Region.

In addition to this, Trent University Durham also offers Bachelor of Business Administration program which presents an integrated approach, spanning corporate, self-employment, online, small business, non-profit and entrepreneurship. Trent also offers numerous pathway programs with Durham College for Business Administration students and an internship program to help prepare students for the business world after graduation.
