"The study of philosophy is at the core of a thinking citizen and I'm grateful to Trent for having taught me some essential lessons in life,” said Yann Martel, bestselling author and Trent alumnus, addressing students, faculty and guests via video at the annual Trent Philosophy Symposium, one of the longest-standing traditions of the Trent Philosophy Society, the University’s oldest undergraduate society.

In his video address, Mr. Martel, who graduated from Trent in 1985, reflected on his discovery of Philosophy at Trent University by saying, “I remember thinking that this is what everyone should study at a certain level. And in fact, I think a lot of the dysfunctions of society today are due to a citizenry that hasn't thought enough about the fundamental questions that philosophy asks."

Mr. Martel’s address followed remarks from Trent University president Dr. Leo Groarke, also a Philosophy graduate, who had similar views to express about the field.

Describing why he believes philosophy is so useful in today’s society, Dr. Groarke said, “Philosophy offers a refuge from the regular world and has a huge impact and contribution to our daily lives…it's a mistake to think that philosophy doesn't have practical significance.”

Trent Philosophy professor and TPS faculty coordinator Dr. Michael Hickson, added: “We were honoured to have President Groarke and Yann Martel give the official welcome. The great success of the symposium, and the successes of the many other events held by the Philosophy department this year, show that Philosophy is thriving at Trent.”
