Students Create a Lasting Legacy on Campus and in the Community

Fourth year Business Administration students in Peterborough and Durham present Legacy Projects

Enlightening, inspiring and amazing are just a few of the words business students used to describe the experience of working on their fourth year Legacy Projects. Students from both Peterborough and Durham showcased their Legacy Projects this week at their respective campuses. Created by Business Administration students, the goal of the Legacy Project is to allow students the opportunity to gain real work experience, by creating something that isn’t just on paper, but something that actually comes to fruition and creates a lasting impression.

One such project on the Peterborough campus was the “Company Crawl” project, created by Laveen Jose, Ryan Smith, Sarah Carthy, Stan Puchyn, Sarah Healey and Trevor Green. The project aims to leave its mark on Trent by revealing the career and business opportunities available in the Peterborough area to soon-to-be graduating students. “Company Crawl” works by bringing students to meet with business leaders in the Peterborough area for networking opportunities and to bridge the gap between the classroom and the office. “The Legacy Project has given me a perceived value of what is in store for me after Trent,” says Mr. Jose. “This gives me the motivation that I require to be able to finish those assignments, be able to be more inquisitive when I go to my classes and it just gives me that right motivation and right direction so that when I graduate I know what I am going to do.“

Another exciting Legacy Project on the Peterborough campus was the “Trent Heritage Collection” project created by Jenna Pilgrim, Elsa Batten, Alex Watson and Mark Hunt. The project has received sponsorship from Trent’s Alumni House, the Bonnie Patterson Leadership Development Grant and the T.E.W. Nind Endowment Fund ensuring the “Trent Heritage Collection” will continue through the years at Trent University.

In Durham, most students chose to focus on an event, whether it was helping out their fellow students with networking opportunities or reaching out to the community and creating a charitable fundraiser. For fourth year students, Brianna Boisvert, Elizabeth Johnson and Brooke Robertson they wanted to reach out to the community and create a legacy about something they were passionate about, animal rescue.

Ms. Boisvert, Ms. Johnson and Ms. Robertson worked in partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings in Oshawa to create “Dine with Your Heart” an evening to raise funds for From My Heart a dog rescue organization in Durham Region. The three students hosted an evening with raffles and negotiated to ensure a percentage of patrons’ bills would go towards the charity. For those not interested in the meal portion, the three students extended their event in partnership with Fountain of Youth Yoga creating a donation-based class. All together the students rose close to a thousand dollars for From My Heart.

“What we wanted to do for the legacy, was to create something that would have an impact and that would give back to the community,” Ms. Boisvert said about their event.

“We learned a lot about the fine details of creating events and actually how hard it is to create an event. We were able to first see our proposal on paper and then see it actually come to reality with this project,” Ms. Robertson added about the project.

Speaking of the projects, Dr. Ray Dart, chair of the Business Administration program, said, “With the Legacy Project it allows students to use a bunch of what is learned in the classroom and apply it to what you feel in your heart. The true legacy is the students and what they carry forward and the community and relationships that come with that.”
