Trent Oshawa Student Makes Headlines at The Huffington Post

Media giant publishes works by fourth-year student Nicholas Ashmore

Before even graduating, Trent University Durham student Nicholas Ashmore has achieved success that most writers only dream of – reaching an audience of millions through having his work published on the Pulitzer Prize-winning, online news site, The Huffington Post.

Passionate about politics, the English and History student had something burning to say about the recent public tirade launched by Sun Media’s Ezra Levant against federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.  His resulting opinion piece published this week by The Huffington Post is now creating huge buzz on social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

“I understand that since it's a political piece, some have strong reactions but no matter the reaction, to be a part of the dialogue is fantastic,” said Mr. Ashmore. “It's so strange but exciting to know that I've been read by so many.”

Mr. Ashmore was inspired to write his current article on Trudeau by a recent seminar led by Trent History professor, historian and best-selling author, Dr. Robert Wright. In addition to being an expert in history and politics, Professor Wright is also one of Mr. Ashmore’s writing mentors.

“Robert has written seven books himself, several of which have been best-sellers,” said Mr. Ashmore. “His own success in writing, coupled with his ever-present support, fuelled my motivation to write this piece.”

With encouragement from Prof. Wright and a desire to promote the student voice, Mr. Ashmore’s first taste of success with The Huffington Post took place in June when the outlet published his article about former provincial Conservative Leader, Tim Hudak, and his opinions on post-secondary students.

Looking to the future, Mr. Ashmore is considering a career in teaching, writing or perhaps politics. Regarding the time he spent honing his talent at Trent he said, “Simply put, the support from the faculty at Trent Oshawa has made me a better writer.”
