In recognition of her dedication to the learning and sharing of First Nations knowledge and practice, Dr. Edna Manitowabi, professor emeritus at Trent, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in Sacred Letters from the University of Sudbury.

Professor Manitowabi is a widely recognized and respected Anishnaabe Elder. She is a fourth degree member of the Midewiwin Society and a teacher of Anishinaabemowin. Professor Emeritus at Trent University, she is considered an expert in Indigenous performance arts. In 2010, Prof. Manitowabi received the Lt. Governor’s Award – Senior's Award – for her life-long commitment to First Nations education.

Prof. Manitowabi was also instrumental in the development of the undergraduate program of Indigenous Studies at the University of Sudbury as well as the Ph.D. program at Trent University, the first of its kind in Canada. It was through her vision that Indigenous Studies and Trent started Nozhem Theatre, our Indigenous performance space that is developing an international reputation in Indigenous theatre and dance performance. She presently resides in her home community of Wikwemikong.
