In advance of Nurse's Week May 6 to 12, 2012, The Trent/Fleming School of Nursing welcomed proud parents, friends and families of its nursing students to the Benedict Gathering Place on Friday, March 30, 2012 for the fourth annual Nursing Awards ceremony.
The School of Nursing is nearing its third and final year of candidacy as an Academic Best Practice Spotlight Organization. The School has also received very positive remarks from the accreditation board of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.
After a keynote address by Dr. Barbara Davies, co-director of the Nursing Best Practice Research Unit and a professor of Nursing at the University of Ottawa, awards were presented to outstanding faculty, students and community organizations.
This was the first awards ceremony for Dr. Kirsten Woodend, newly appointed Dean of the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing in 2011. Professor Woodend presented the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Nursing Scholarship to Dr. Janet Rush, for her outstanding contribution in the domains of scholarship through ongoing development of students and faculty.

Trent/Fleming Nursing Student Association Faculty Award
Presented to faculty member Ann MacLeod by Tristan Hall for actively supporting students in their initiatives and leadership
Nicholls/Civic Nurses Alumnae Prize
Presented to third-year student Sarah McCrory by the president of the Nicholls/Civic Nursing Alumnae, Brenda Angione, for demonstrating excellence in patient care in her clinical placement
Preceptor Award
Presented to Suzanne Galloway by Larry Stinson of the Peterborough County-City Health Unit, for demonstrating leadership in nursing education, student-centred learning, and advocacy for supportive organizational policies
Parkinson’s Society Dr. Cragg Award
Presented to students Alison Skilling and Manry Xu who both demonstrated interest and experience with Parksinson’s Disease and increased awareness of related issues, by Amy Rogers of the Parkinson’s Society
Janet Bews Scholarship for interest and experience in Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases
Presented to third-year student Katie Gerolamy, who demonstrated strong academic achievement, along with interest and experience in caring for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, by Dorothy Owens, Chair Alzheimer’s Society Board of Directors
Central East Community Care Access Centre Nursing Prize
Presented to Angela McIntosh and Sarah Wilkins for demonstrating active records of and/or ongoing commitments to volunteer or work experience in a variety of community-based settings, by Ann MacLeod on behalf of the Foundation of the Central East Community Care Access Centre Recipients
Registered Nurses Foundation of Ontario Sheila Basrur Award for Oncology Nursing
Presented to Jacqueline Galica by Professor Janet Rush
RNAO Best Practice Guideline Student Champion
Presented to Laruen Bot for demonstrated leadership in dissemination of the RNAO BPGs, knowledge transfer and use in clinical practice among peers by fellow students Samantha Preston and Hannah Silk, who also recognized other student champions
RNAO Best Practice Guideline Faculty Champion
Presented to Andrea Mowry as a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in championing the integration and adoption of nursing best practices into the curriculum, by Dr. Barbara Davies
Best Practice Spotlight Organization Partnership Recognition
Presented by Andrea Mowry to Fairhaven Long-Term Care and St. Joseph’s at Fleming Long Term Care
Also during the awards, a special announcement was made by visiting representatives of CIBC that a $200,000 donation will establish the CIBC Nursing Awards, along with a fund to help first-year nursing students at Trent University. Starting in September 2012, twenty four students entering the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing will receive the new awards, valued at up to $2,500 each.
