Continuing Education's New Fall Line-Up |

New and exciting additions to the Professional Development program for fall include Another new course is "Emotional Intelligence and Successful Leadership," led by Dr. James D. A. Parker, Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Emotion and Health Research Laboratory at Trent University, and Laura Wood, the Research Coordinator of the Emotion and Health Research Laboratory. Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been recognized as a crucial element of effective functioning in the workplace. By the end of this course you will have an understanding of the theoretical value of EI in the workplace and, specifically, the importance it plays in effective leadership. In addition to the new courses, one of our most popular Professional Development courses, "Making Dynamic Presentations: Secrets of the Pros", makes a triumphant return for fall 2006. This course is taught by Diane Wolf, an award-winning international speaker and writer who specializes in the fields of writing, communication, and leadership. Whether you dread delivering a speech, face writer's block when developing a speech, or you simply feel your presentation skills could use a tune-up, this practical, content-rich program will teach you how to create and deliver a dynamic presentation. In the Personal Enrichment Portfolio, the Continuing Education program also has several exciting new additions, including "Taking Charge of Your Health: Practical Approaches." Now, more than ever, the need to be informed advocates for our own health is paramount. This new series, co-sponsored by Trent's Institute for Health Studies, is designed to bring timely and relevant health research to the community. In each practical session, faculty will share highlights of their research findings, with an emphasis on take-home knowledge and skills that can help you take charge of your health. Another exciting new course is "Emily Carr: The Meaning of "Spirit" in Her Art" with Instructor David Aurandt, Executive Director of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. In 2006 a major exhibition of Carr's work opened at the National Gallery of Canada, in partnership with the Vancouver Art Gallery. This long-overdue attention on her work underscores a new understanding of her significance in the emergence of Canadian art from its derivative origins. This course will look at Carr's life and work in the context of Canadian art becoming distinctly "Canadian" and in relationship to early 20th-century ideas of "the spiritual in art." Continuing Education at Trent is also pleased to announce that one of our most popular Personal Enrichment courses will be returning this fall with new daytime hours! "More Shorts with a Twist: 20th-Century Irish Short Stories," will be taught by Professor Emeritus Finn Gallagher, Department of English Literature. Dr. Gallaghar has served as President of the Canadian Association of Irish Studies and of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club. The Irish have long enjoyed a reputation as skilled story-tellers, and the 20th-century saw a remarkable flourishing of the short-story form in Ireland. Join Professor Gallagher as he reads and leads discussion of stories by Elizabeth Bowen, Emma Donaghue, Anne Enright, Norma Harrs, Bernard Mac Laverty, Frank O'Connor, Liam O'Flaherty, and William Trevor.
