Third-year concurrent education student Catherine Dickinson of Stittsville, Ontario works up a shine on President Bonnie Patterson's vehicle in preparation for Shinerama 2000, the Sept. 9 cystic fibrosis fund-raising blitz by Trent students throughout the city. Dickinson is campaign director and hopes to raise $22,000 for CF research. In its third year as a Trent-wide effort, the campaign is being expanded to include upper year students as volunteers in addition to new students.

Trent has been chosen by an increasing number of Canadian and international students beginning their university education this fall. The total of new domestic students was at 1,262 at the end of August, up 30 students from the same point last year. The total includes 928 first year students coming from Canadian secondary schools or as mature students, and 334 transfer students, some of whom will be in first year.

In addition, approximately 315 international students will be enrolled in September, up from 228 in Term 1 last year and 245 in Term 2. It's also anticipated that 20-30 will join in January 2001. These numbers include degree students, one-year exchange and special students, and Trent's English as a Second Language (esl) program students.

The international students will be from more than 80 countries, with the largest numbers of degree-seeking students coming from China, Japan, the United States and Mexico. Exchange students come in greatest numbers from England and Germany. To help acquaint new international students and out-of-country Canadians, the Trent International Program holds an annual camp on Labour Day Weekend. This year's was the largest camp in Trent's history.

Trent will have 62 new graduate students this year, joining 148 returning graduate students.

Approximately 3,300 returning undergrad students are expected.

A total of 1,100 students have chosen to live in residence, filling the spaces completely, according to Heather Avery, Director of Student Affairs. Her office is maintaining a short waiting list.
