Trent University and Shanghai Normal University Partner to Discuss Joint Degree Program

Signing Ceremony to take place at Trent on May 18

Tuesday, May 16, 2006, Peterborough

On Thursday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. in the A.J. Smith Room of the Bata Library, five delegates from Shanghai Normal University will participate in a signing ceremony with representatives from Trent University to commit to developing stronger relationships between the two institutions.

Under discussion is a cooperative program that would allow Chinese students to complete the first two years of their bachelor's degree at Shanghai Normal University and years three and four at Trent University. By earning a degree from both universities, the students will have the best of both worlds — the excellent perspective and research experience of a Canadian University, as well as the knowledge and networks of their home university. The goal of the cooperation is to train students to become young professionals with solid specialized knowledge, a broad humanities base, fluency in English, and strong cross-cultural adaptability. The joint initiative would also provide opportunities for Trent faculty to teach in China, and potentials for Trent students to learn Chinese language and culture.

"This is a really exciting opportunity for both Trent and Shanghai Normal," said Vice President (Academic) Susan Apostle Clark, who will be hosting a breakfast and signing ceremony on Thursday. "This represents a long-term agreement that can be built upon over the years as a means of fostering a true international partnership."

The Shanghai Normal delegation, made up of Vice President Lu Jianfei, Director of International Exchange Division Hua Hua, Chairman of the College Committee of International Chinese Studies Zhang Yuefang, Vice Dean of Tourism College Gao Jun, and Vice Dean of College of Environmental and Life Science Yang Liangzhun, arrive at Trent on Wednesday, May 17 for a two day visit. In addition to participating in the signing ceremony, during their time at Trent the delegation will also be the guests of a dinner hosted by Trent President Bonnie Patterson, will meet with other faculty, and will have a tour of the campus.

Media are invited and encouraged to attend the Signing Ceremony on May 18.
