Trent University Opens its Doors for Annual Behind the Scenes Tour

May 13 Event Features Profiles of Key Research Areas

Tuesday, May 9, 2006, Peterborough

Trent University will be holding its annual Behind the Scenes Tour, which provides donors and the public with an opportunity to see first-hand what happening at Trent, on Saturday, May 13 starting at 11:00 a.m. in Peter Gzowski College, Room 117 on the Symons Campus.

Highlights of this year's tour include three presentations by Trent professors who will outline exciting new areas of research being undertaking at the University. Details of these presentations are as follows:

  • "Canada's Kyoto Conundrum" – Professor Stephen Hill

Prof. Hill, an expert in environmental risk management and decision making will be discussing the effects of the Kyoto Agreement on the way we design policies that govern our environment.  We'll learn how Canada is dealing with one of its current conundrums.

  • "Exploring Fat Across Cultures" – Professor Anne Meneley

Professor Meneley investigates a wide range of topics when it comes to understanding fat. From hip hop culture's Phat to how Swedish teenagers talk about body fat to a mythical Andean vampire that sucks fat instead of blood.  Fat is the new smoking. As our obesity epidemic continues to grow she takes a non-medical point of view. We'll learn about fat in the broader sense – pardon the pun.

  • "Fighting Global Viral Disease: The International Consortium on Anti-Virals (ICAV)" – Professor Jeremy Carver

Professor Carver will be discussing issues surrounding the ICAV. Its inception came on the heels of the SARS crisis. ICAV is comprised of experts and institutions from 15 countries. Come hear how we'll need to prepare for the impending flu pandemic.

All members of the public who are interested in participating in this free, three-hour tour are asked to RSVP to Sylvia at (705) 748.1011 ext.7311 or via e-mail to afund@trentu.ca. All participants should wear comfortable shoes. Light refreshments will be served.

The Behind the Scenes Tour is hosted by the Annual Giving and Planned Giving Programs through the Office of External Relations and Advancement.
