Trent University's Classics Drama Group to Perform Hippolytos February 14-17

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tickets on Sale Now for Great Greek Tragedy

Friday, February 10, 2006, Peterborough

Trent University’s Classics Drama Group will be performing Euripides’ Hippolytos from February 14 through 17 at the First People’s Performance Space in Gzowski College on the Symons Campus. All performances begin at 8:00 p.m. and tickets are only $5.

Complete with duelling goddesses, love spells, betrayal, death, banishment, and retaliation, Hippolytos is a true Greek tragedy, and according to Lucy Dawson, the director of the production, an example of where Shakespeare probably got his material.

“It also has really juicy female parts and really juicy male parts” says Ms. Dawson, explaining the choice the Classics Drama Group made to return to Hippolytos after 11 years – the play was also delivered in 1994, the group’s inaugural year.

Since the first production, launched as a teaching tool to allow students in a course on ancient drama the opportunity to watch and evaluate a Greek play in action, the Classics Drama Group has become very well known in Peterborough and around the province. As one of the only universities in Canada to have such a group, the Conacher Players, as they have been known since 2001, have performed for audiences at Trinity College at the University of Toronto and for the Classics departments at the University of Waterloo and Laurier.

Preview Night for this year’s production of Euripides’ Hippolytos will be on Tuesday, February 14, followed by Opening Night on Wednesday, February 15, Gala Night on Thursday, February 16, and an encore presentation on Friday, February 17. All performances begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be held in the First People’s Performance Space at Gzowski College. Tickets are only $5. To reserve or purchase tickets, contact the Department of Ancient History and Classics at 748.1011 x1814.
