Peterborough Professional Firefighters Association and Trent University Welcome New Matching Donations Program to Help Students in Financial Need

Tuesday, January 31, 2006, Peterborough

The Peterborough Professional Firefighters Association (PPFFA) joins with Trent University in welcoming the recently announced Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) established by the provincial government. The trust will match dollar-for-dollar donations to Trent to build endowment funds to provide financial assistance to students. These bursaries and awards are directed towards Ontario students with demonstrated financial need.

For more than 25 years, the Peterborough Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA) Bursary has been awarded annually to full time Trent students demonstrating academic achievement and financial need.

PPFFAJudy Harris, Fire Alarm Operator (Communications) and Captain Daniel Kingdon (Suppression) can't say enough about the generosity of their colleagues at the Peterborough Fire Department. They both describe how extremely proud they are to be working with such an exceptionally giving group.

"The support of the Peterborough Professional Fire Fighters Association has been terrific. They are great community leaders," said Richard Morgan, Senior Development Manager at Trent. "We are also pleased that other donors
will be able to benefit from the introduction of this matching program as well. A number of our supporters, including the PPFA had been waiting for the announcement of this new program."

This praise follows on the heels of a new pledge of $20,393 from local firefighters to be added to the Peterborough Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA) Bursary at Trent University. Their donation will be doubled by OTSS for a contribution of more than $40,000 to the endowment fund.

First consideration of the award is given to sons and daughters of full-time firefighters employed at the Peterborough Fire Department who meet the bursary qualifications. A committee comprised of PPFFA members and Trent's Financial Aid Office staff members decide on the bursary recipients.

"It's great that we can provide some financial support to our own children attending Trent full time but also important that we can reach out into the community and assist other deserving students. In fact over the years our awards have been made predominantly to this broader community," says Captain Kingdon.
