Learning How to "Teach Canada" at Trent!

A new Canadian Studies field course offered at Trent University this summer will help those who wish to teach others about Canada. Teaching Canada: Approaches to and resources for key themes in the teaching of Canadian Studies (August 8 – 22, 2005) is appropriate for students, teachers and those interested in learning to teach Canadian studies in their curriculum.

The course will take a project based approach to understanding Canadian studies and students will come away with a 'resource kit' for teaching about Canada through interdisciplinary teaching strategies. Teaching Canada includes 9 days of participation in the Summer Explorations in Canadian Cultures(SECC) program, offering participants the opportunity to learn through field excursions and hands-on learning. The course is an excellent professional development opportunity for teachers and an exciting way for students to earn university course credit.

During the first six days of the course, students will participate in lectures, exercises and workshops around topics such as Canadian Imagery, thematic techniques for teaching Canada, Northern Studies, developing core themes and using the Teaching Canada 'resource kit'. Resource kits will include teaching guides, resource lists, web-based resource guides and numerous other Canadian Studies support resources.

Over the next nine days participants will join the SECC program to experience a variety of Canadian studies topics complimented by numerous field excursions. Lectures and field trips will be themed around topics such as Aboriginal Rights and Issues, Social Systems, Immigration, Multiculturalism, Politics and Environmental Issues.
