Naomi Klein to give 15th annual Margaret Laurence Lecture at Trent University

Naomi Klein will deliver the fifteenth annual Margaret Laurence Lecture to be held at Trent University on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 8:00 p.m. in Wenjack Theatre at Otonabee College.

Ms. Klein, an award-winning journalist and author of the international best-seller No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies, will speak on the topic of "Economic Terror, Deep Democracy: Reports from Communities of Resistance."

No Logo has been translated into 27 languages and The New York Times called the work "a movement bible." In 2000, The Guardian Newspaper short-listed No Logo for their First Book Award, and in 2001, the book won the Canadian National Business Book Award, and the French Prix Médiations.

Naomi Klein’s articles have appeared in numerous publications including The Guardian, The New Statesman, Newsweek International, The New York Times, The Village Voice and Ms. Magazine. She writes an internationally syndicated column for The Globe and Mail newspaper and another for The Nation magazine in the U.S. A collection of her work, entitled Fences and Windows: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Globalization Debate was published in October 2002.

Ms. Klein is a frequent media commentator and university guest lecturer. She is a former Miliband Fellow at the London School of Economics and is presently the Freda Kirchway Fellow of the Nation Institute.

Currently living in Toronto, Ms. Klein is writing/producing a documentary about new forms of direct democracy in Argentina. Ms. Klein’s talk, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in the Senior Common Room at Lady Eaton College.

The annual Margaret Laurence Lecture honours Trent's fourth chancellor, and acknowledges her contributions to literature, feminism, ecology, and the peace movement. Financial support for the 2003 lecture is provided by the Women's Studies Program, the Margaret Laurence Lecture Fund, and the Canadian Studies Directorate, Heritage Canada.
