Ugandan Doctor and Traditional Healer to Speak at Trent on August 22

Dr. Sekagya Yahaya Hills to Discuss Importance of Traditional Healing Practices in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Friday, August 18, 2006, Peterborough

The department of Indigenous Studies at Trent University, in partnership with Equinox, will present a free, public talk by Dr. Sekagya Yahaya Hills, a dental surgeon and practicing traditional African Healer from Uganda, on Tuesday, August 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Mshiikenh, “The Gathering Space,” located in the Enweying/Gzowski College Building on the east bank of the Symons campus.

In his presentation, entitled “Preservation and Restoration of African Traditional Medicine and Indigenous Science,” Dr. Hills will discuss the importance of traditional healing practices in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Dr. Hills, who is in Canada to participate in the International AIDS conference in Toronto, will be in the Peterborough region for a week-long stay. During his time in the area, Dr. Hills will be meeting with health advocates, activists, and local citizens.

In addition to his roles as a surgeon and traditional healer, Dr. Hills is the General Secretary of the National Integrated Forum for Traditional Health Practitioners in Uganda and the Representative Director of PROMETRA International, responsible for Eastern, Central and Southern African regions. His work integrates both the Western scientific and African Traditional Knowledge.
