Guidelines Adopted for the Use and Stewardship of Nature Areas

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From the Board of Governors' Meeting - Friday, June 23, 2006 Peterborough

Report on Trent Nature Areas

The Board of Governors adopted guidelines contained in a report from administration for the use and stewardship of Trent University's Nature Areas.

Administration's report provides eight recommendations with respect to the draft Stewardship Plan, including establishing new nature area boundaries and guidelines for the management of the Nature Areas. With the establishment of Nature Area boundaries, up-to-date land use strategies are now available for the entire Symons Campus.

Update to Strategy 2010

On the recommendation of Senate, an addition to the Strategic Directions for Trent University 2003-2010 was approved by the Board concerning the colleges.

Consultations have been undertaken with students and, as a result, the section outlining information about Trent's college system has been recommended for inclusion in the Strategic Plan. This document raises key issues concerning the colleges and calls for a new Colleges sub-committee, which is already in place, to take a lead role in future discussions and consultations across the University.

Strategic Priorities 2005-06

President Patterson provided a summary to the Board that captures this year's progress towards the goals set out for the 2005-2006 year.

In the fall of 2006, the Strategic Directions document will be reviewed and extended through to 2014, Trent's 50th anniversary year, and will incorporate philanthropic and specific fundraising targets. Key priorities for the coming year will also be developed and shared with the Board at that time.

Board Performance Against Objectives, 2005-06

A summary was provided on the performance of the Board against stated objectives for 2005-06. Each year the Board of Governors identifies several special objectives and projects. The 2005-06 objectives were focused on Strategic University Directions and Competitive Positioning, Financial Strength and Self-Sufficiency, and High Quality Governance.

Health and Safety:

The annual report for Occupational Health and Safety at Trent University was presented to the Board. The report outlines Trent's commitment to health and safety as reflected by the University's existing policies. Three key sections are addressed in the report. Those sections are: the joint health and safety committee established and maintained at Trent as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act; Trent's continued participation in the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board's Safety Group program, which is now currently in year four of five; and the establishment of various leadership teams.

Vision Statement:

The President updated the Board on discussions at the senior level to develop a draft Vision Statement for the University, as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2014. Further dialogue and consultations will take place regarding the draft.
