Trent University Announces Peterborough Regional Science Fair Winners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Friday, April 15, 2005, Peterborough

Trent University is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Peterborough Regional Science Fair, including those who will go on to represent the Peterborough region at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, next month.

The 35th annual science fair was held April 12 and attracted more than 340 students from kindergarten to grade 12. The fair is a yearly celebration of youth and science.

On the day of the Science Fair, there were approximately 100 judges involved in evaluating the projects and identifying those of the highest merit. Awards were presented in the Wenjack Theatre at 3:30 p.m.

The region has a strong reputation for sending high-calibre students to the CWSF and many have gone on to win gold medals. This year, the CWSF will be held from May 15 to 22.

“With the strong commitment of a volunteer team of organizers and judges, and with the financial support of community and university sponsors, the fair promotes excellence in the biological, physical, computer and engineering sciences,” said Dr. Brian Patrick, science fair director and a professor in Trent's Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences program.

“This year, the winners Earl Sheppard from Lakefield College School; Olivia Saccucci from Lakefield College School and Abigail Menendez from Westmount Public School move on to represent the Peterborough region at the Canada Wide Science Fair. It is a wonderful venue to interact with fellow students across the country and to inspire a new generation of scientific minds.”
