TIME VI: Model United Nations Returns to Trent University |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEOctober 21, 2004, Peterborough The Trent Model United Nations Society is pleased to host the 6th annual Trent International Model UN Experience (TIME) from October 28 to 31 at Trent University. Since 1999, Trent students have welcomed high school students from across Ontario to the campus to engage in debate, discussion and simulation of the United Nations and similar international organizations. Students represent nations, research and advocate foreign policy, and work towards resolutions on important contemporary issues. This year, 130 delegates will make TIME VI the largest conference yet, featuring seven council simulations. Agenda items include the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, North American missile defense, the status of refugees, the role of Islam in Middle East governments, east/west negotiations with Georgia, and the continuing threat of piracy in South East Asia. Complementing the regular debates will be a team of dedicated press reporters, also comprised of students, who will pursue their fellow delegates with questions and cameras and will host press conferences and media scrums to further simulate life as a real diplomat. TIME is extremely pleased to welcome two guest speakers to address the delegates this year, including Dr. Stephen Clarkson from the University of Toronto. A noted expert on Canada/US relations and political economy, Dr. Clarkson will speak to delegates and guests at the International Dinner and Opening Ceremonies on Thursday October 28 in Otonabee College. He will be followed at the Closing Ceremonies in Gzowski College by Ms. Jenna Slotin, who will join us from the United Nations Development Program in New York City. A recent grad student with both field experience in Kosovo and work experience at the UN, Ms. Slotin will undoubtedly be an inspiration to staff and delegates alike. TIME VI Secretary General Ted Cragg stated, "We are very excited to welcome many new schools and students, from Ottawa to Cornwall, Oshawa and Lindsay, and give them perhaps their first exposure to international relations and diplomacy. I am extremely proud and appreciative of all the staff and their hard work, particularly Emiliee Whetung who will assume Secretary General responsibilities next year," said Cragg. The TIME conference is organized through the generous support of departments and groups at Trent University, including the Registrar's Office, Political Studies Department, Trent Central Student Association, Alumni Association, TEW Nind Fund, Trent International Political Economy Centre, Trent International Program, the Vice President Academic, Champlain & Otonabee Colleges, and the Trent University Bookstore.
