Trent University Model UN Conference to Feature International Speaker

The Trent International Model United Nations Experience (TIME) is pleased to host Dr. Marwan Bishara as guest speaker at its fifth annual conference, to take place October 23 - 26 at Trent University.

From Paris, France, Dr. Bishara is a Palestinian author and columnist, and an Israeli citizen from Nazareth. He is a lecturer at the American University of Paris and a research fellow at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Besides having a number of publications to his name, he writes for a variety of newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune (Paris), Le Monde Diplomatique (Paris), La Vanguardia (Barcelona), Al-Hayat (London), and WOZ (Zurich). He is also the senior political analyst of Abu Dhabi T.V., a leading Middle Eastern news channel and famous rival to Al-Jazeera. His brother, Azmi Bishara, is an Arab member of the Israeli Knesset.

Dr. Bishara will be speaking on October 25 at 8:30 p.m. at Trent’s Wenjack Theatre. This lecture, titled The American Empire: Force of Good? is open to the public, and admission is free. Dr. Bishara will also be speaking to TIME delegates.

TIME is a model United Nations (UN) experience hosted by university students, for high school students. In the event’s history, more than 500 students have visited the Trent campus and participated in the simulation.

Model UN allows students to represent nations and debate issues on such bodies as the Security Council, NATO, Arab League, African Union and Criminal Tribunals.

"The objective is to learn about international relations and global politics while honing debating skills and working toward resolutions on the issues at hand," says Todd Parker, secretary general.

TIME also includes media simulations, such as press conferences and newsletters, and social events.

The conference is proudly presented by the Trent Model United Nations Society, an entirely student run and coordinated organization. The society greatly appreciates the support of the Trent Registrar’s Office, Political Studies department, International Political Economy Centre, Alumni Affairs, Nind Fund, and the Trent Central Student Association, who have all contributed to the conference’s success. Volunteers from both the Trent and Peterborough communities are welcome to participate in the coordination of TIME, and are welcome to view the council debates in action.
