Posted: Tuesday, October 21, 2003 More than 75 high school students to participate in Trent University’s Model UN TIME: Trent International Model United Nations Experience - October 23 - 26 More than 75 local high school students will put their own opinions aside this weekend as they advocate for their assigned nations as part of the fifth annual Trent International Model United Nations Experience (TIME). The students will take part in simulated council proceedings, having researched their assigned countries and prepared foreign policies. Students choose to represent their countries at some of six simulated councils, including the Security Council and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As the students speak, lobby and debate on behalf of their countries, they will encounter crises and be expected to work with the press corps. They will have the opportunity to do further research on-site at a special resource centre. "The primary goal of TIME is to provide an opportunity and a forum for high school students to learn about global issues, international relations and especially, how international bodies, such as the Security Council, operate," says Todd Parker, the model UN’s secretary general and a Trent student. "It’s also an opportunity for them to home their debating, negotiating and speaking skills." TIME is organized
by the Trent Model United Nations Society and involves 15 to 20 volunteers.
The conference will kick-off
Thursday
evening
and wrap-up Sunday afternoon. Dr. Bishara will also be speaking on the topic "The American Empire: Force Of Good?" on October 23 at 8:30 p.m. at Trent University’s Wenjack Theatre.
